School supplies have been out for weeks, Halloween candy is showing up in the grocery stores already and if you still need a bathing suit - you're outta luck! Ahhhh, the waning days of summer are making their way for cooler days.
The Cottage is doing a little changing of it's own. We've got harvest tables coming out of our ears, sideboards, cupboards and sets of chairs, all in time for those anticipated holiday gatherings.

When you have a shop, you come across tons of really cool things. I mean after all you're pretty much shopping all the time for stuff you LOVE (did I say how much I love my job). It's important to keep only what you truly love, because pretty quickly your home can start looking like, well, a shop (or one of those "hoarders")! The reason I bring this up at all is in the last couple of weeks, some pretty neato stuff has come into the shop and I want most of it. I'm really trying to be good, but it's been a bit of a test.

You don't need me to tell you how HOT it is outside, so I won't. So on this very "warm" day, what a welcome breath of fresh air when old friends come to visit the shop! Ms. Lisa, Jackson and little Ava came a callin' - it's been a long time since last seeing them. My oh my, there's nothing like seeing young children you haven't seen in forever to realize how fast time goes speeding by. Jackson has grown like a weed and little Ava was a brand new baby the last time we saw them! Great seeing you guys again.

Sometimes you run across an old something that just speaks to you. Perhaps it was the texture that only years and years of use or weather engraved its mark upon it. Maybe it spoke to you because the color reminded you of pink ballet dancers on your birthday cake or that shade of robin's egg blue we all try so hard to capture in our homes now. Doesn't really matter, if it stirs a deep feeling, you find a place in your home to add another layer of detail.

I know this is a blog about our shop, but please indulge me for just a moment....

After you've been collecting as long as we have, you become a little selective in what you take home. You kinda have to, otherwise your homes start looking like your shop. Lately my house has been making my skin crawl a little. I'm feeling like it's time to edit, drastically! Having said that, I did bring something home recently...

This pair of vintage horses came from an old child's riding toy. They are double-sided and the colors have worn and faded over the years, giving them that wonderful patina we love so. I think they work right into my summer mantle scape! Every so often, we do give ourselves permission to keep a few of the wonderful things we buy for the shop.

And if Ann could keep something, I think she'd take this baby home for her wine collection.....

Leesburg Flower and Garden Show

The downtown area will welcome in spring with the annual Flower and Garden Show this weekend. If you've never been, do try and make it. It's by far my favorite event of the year. The town closes off the streets on Friday night and the vendors move in with their trucks, trailers and tents. The over-the-top beautiful landscape displays created are out of this world. There is always the creative ideas to take away for your own gardens as well. And even if this event is not your kind of thing, everybody loves a good homemade lemonade and funnel cake!
The Cottage is busting with ladders, birdhouses, barn stars and vintage birdbaths. Hope to see you this weekend!

Snow, snow go away.....

So much to tell you!

First a bedroom update. The only good thing about all this ice and snow, it has allowed me to stay home and paint! I don't get the opportunity to be around the house for consecutive days and it's such a treat. I love the color (Behr - Toasted Cashew). It has brightened the room so much, but still gives a really warm feeling overall. The bed started to grow on the husband the longer it was in its new position. Now he loves it!
I'm so anxious to find the finishing touches - bed skirt, pillows and the right piece of furniture for the wall the bed was on.
Here are a few pics of the work in progress....

I recovered my vintage bench in linen (50% off at Hancock Fabric)!
The blue pillows are a nubby chenille from PB outlet.

I am especially proud of the bamboo blinds. They were too light with the new paint color, so I stained them!
I love the contrast. My curtain panels are vintage twin bedspreads - love them too!

The mirror looks awesome above the newly painted PB headboard. The pillows will be changed out (soon I hope).

Found this great lamp, where else, HomeGoods! Love the linen looking shade and the apothecary jar base.

Now for the second item of business...

Starting this Friday, February 4th - Sunday, February 6th, the cottage is having a SALE!! Beds, tables, cupboards, frames, mirrors, baskets, linens, you name it, it's on SALE! We're open this Friday from 10am to 9pm and 10 to 5 Saturday & Sunday.

Master Bedroom Redo

I thought it might be fun to bring you along to watch the much needed redo of my master bedroom. I've been kicking this around in my mind forever and for what ever unknown reason the motivation moved me to take the plunge yesterday. The room has been, what I call terra cotta, for about ten plus years. I've added things like mirrors, pillows and other accessories over the years, but the furniture arrangement has never changed! My taste has changed somewhat and I am going for a more serene, calm feeling. I've posted the before pictures below, along with the new duvet and the paint chip (Behr + primer in Toasted Cashew) that will be my inspiration. I'm so excited to dive into this project, as I have a very clear vision of what it will look like when it's done! I will be editing a couple of pieces and looking for a few new ones to replace them. Take a peek....

One of the things we love most about what we do, is the "buying"! Hands down, it's probably one of the most important aspects of this business. Buying smart means many things. #1 Buy what you love. #2 Buy at a good price. This allows you to make a little profit and pass along a good deal to your customer. #3 Buy with some idea of a look or idea you're going after. #4 Buy a variety of big, small and in between sized items. You need to offer a little of everything.
We had the opportunity to go to auction this week. Ann and I have always said someday we are going to write a book. The characters we encounter in this business are truly better than anything you could ever make up! We were standing around waiting on some items we wanted and I couldn't help but laugh to myself at this sight. It so reminded me of a bunch of birds hanging out on phone wire catching up on the days news. I'm willing to wager most of these men didn't come to buy at all, but to just socialize with one another. Wonder what the big story of the day was?

We have had an especially busy week. Anytime you transition from one season to another at the cottage it's quite the undertaking. Going from summer's playful bursts of beachy colors to autumn's jeweled tones and harvest-time pale ales is never an easy flip. But we love this time of year and flip we must. Orange and black, tweeds and plaid, throws and layers, turtlenecks and cords - Fall is here!

And did I hear someone say the number "5"?! I believe I did. And since you asked, the cottage will be celebrating its 5th Anniversary next month. I know, we can't believe it either. So stay tuned for the announcements and fanfare - really!

Until then, throw on Aunt Shirley's afghan and enjoy the new pics.

Don't mean to rush the seasons. There is nothing worse than Halloween candy in the grocery stores in August or Christmas stuff for that matter! But having said that, the cottage received a costume catalog today. I remember my kids many years ago carrying these things around for weeks, going back and forth on that all too important decision what to be for Halloween. Of course, for anyone who knows my kids, Zach was always Batman, every year, always! Anyway, as I thumbed through the catalog, I came across this....
